About Me

Updated June 5, 2013

I suppose I should have an About Me segment if I'm going to be active (and on the content team!) again. I'm going to be writing this a bit like an old geezer writing his memoirs, though, because my memory of the last couple years is a little dicey. Everything you'll see is true, but I may have forgotten some events.

I'm David, an 18-year-old science and philosophy enthusiast. I started playing Runescape in early 2007, prompted by a friend I met at a YMCA I live very close to. I was F2P for a few years, though I'm not sure exactly when I began to have membership, but I always kept my eye on events in the communities of both P2P and F2P.

I first stumbled upon Zybez when searching for player-written guides in the summer of 2008. I found the forums, the guide section specifically, before the main site, which makes me a bit of an oddity. I decided I'd stumble around the forums a bit, and I found some questions I knew the answers to in the questions board. That was the magic trigger that prompted me to register.

Ever since registering, I've been answering questions, asking some of my own, and debating about whatever I could put my mind to, whether it be RS efficiency (which I was very big on in 2010) or about current events in Off-Topic.

Late in 2010, I applied for the position of content teamer. I thought it would be a good idea, because that same friend who got me into RS had been teaching me basic html and visual basic, and because I knew how almost everything in the game worked. I'd also been getting more familiar with scripting (in the most general sense possible) because of a science activity at my school called SMART Team. I got accepted into the team. It was nice for a little while, but I soon realized that I had to work several hours a night if I wanted to graduate with my high school class on-time. This brought me into a pretty deep depression. Due to several related things along those lines, my activity dwindled. I'm not sure if I was kicked for my inactivity or I actively left, but either one would have honestly been appropriate.

My online activity remained at a relatively reduced state until mid-spring of 2011, largely due to lethargy. All was not lost, though. I began to spend more and more time contributing more to SMART Team, and I spent more time with my clanmates from RSB's Cruel Vengeance (Matt, Josh, Jason, Damian, you guys have no idea how much you helped me in 2011) and I found that both brought me great relief. In the 2011-2012 year, I went through a remedial program to make up high school credits, and I graduated on time.

My online activity began to pick up again in the summer of 2012. I realized around that time that I didn't have enough money to start college yet, though so I started job searching. It didn't go well. I was nearly tempted to give up on making my own life and start taking unemployment instead, but one night I realized I'd literally rather die than become a parasite. I began looking for volunteer opportunities to get myself out there in hopes of increasing my chances at finding a job. The first volunteer came up pretty quickly - an opportunity to assist in operating that SMART Team program. It was very fulfilling to contribute to something so awesome.

I caught a break about 9 months before present. The center that ran the SMART Team program (which is an outreach program from a local college to local high schools) needed people to work for the company that funds it. I was referred to the supervisor of that company, and due to having a foot in the door already, I was accepted. I've been taking it easy since then, (trying) to save up slowly for college - saving's not a race - and spending the rest of my time doing, frankly, what I want. It's been a relief from the last few years, honestly.

A few weeks ago, an opportunity to be on the content team came up. I reapplied, and got accepted (again, thanks to a foot in the door hehe). I'm looking forward to getting started on the site. There's a lot to be done, and I'm willing to do it.
