RuneScape Community brings you
Member of the Month

This competition is for the community to decide who they feel has been the best overall member over the past month. The best part of this competition is the community has a chance to choose who will be MotM, as compared to the older competition, where it was solely decided by staff members. To become member of the month, you must show a sense of dedication, and post well throughout the boards. You must also be nominated by a member.

Nomination process

In order to be eligible to nominate a person, you must be a member or above. This means, that you must have at least 50 posts. This is to ensure that no one attempts to cheat and register multiple accounts as junior members just to get their names on the list.

In order to be eligible for nomination, you must be a member. This excludes junior members and senior members*. This is for the purpose of a member gaining some recognition in the community for their successes in posting.
*Note: If a senior member was a member for at least 90% of the month (Take date they were promoted, divide by number of days in the month, multiply by 100 to find percent) in which the competition is for, they may be eligible for nomination.

To nominate a person all you have to do is PM The duck. You must label the PM as "Nomination for MotM". This will make it much easier for me to tally up nominations after I receive them all. You can nominate up to two (2) people, no more. You also may not nominate yourself**. If you do, your nomination will be void, and you will be disqualified from the competition. Also, you must not publicly display who you nominated. This is supposed to be a surprise for everyone who was nominated! Just simply PM me the name(s), and that should be all.
**Note: If you are caught asking others to vote for you, or you are bribing others to vote for you, etc., you will be disqualified from the competition. If you truly deserve the recognition from this competition, you will be nominated.

Voting Process

Following the nomination process, the staff will vote on the members nominated on who they believe is the best candidate for this award. After the voting process, the winner's name will be posted in the RuneScape Community News section of the community.

Best of luck to everyone! You can start sending me your nominations at this time. :-)

Cyberattack: Up to 74 countries affected by leaked nsa software

12 May 2017 - 06:14 PM

There have been more than 45,000 attacks of the WannaCry ransomware, mostly in Russia, say researchers.

Up to 74 countries have been affected by the ransomware cyberattack that has struck the NHS, according to experts.

Among the other nations hit were Spain, Ukraine and India, said researchers from the Kaspersky Lab.

There have been more than 45,000 attacks worldwide, mostly in Russia, the Securelist cyber security website reported.

It said: "It's important to note that our visibility may be limited and incomplete and the range of targets and victims is likely much, much higher."

Mikko Hypponen, from tech firm F-Secure, called it "the biggest ransomware outbreak in history".

Spain's industry ministry said the attack affected the Microsoft Windows operating system of employees' computers.

Telecommunications giant Telefonica was among the many targets.

The company claimed the attack was limited to some computers on an internal network and had not affected clients or services.

Russia has been most affected by the attack.
In the US, delivery company FedEx said it was experiencing issues with some of its Windows systems.

Ransomware is malicious software that infects machines, locks them by encrypting data and then attempts to extort money to let users back in.

The software used in the latest attacks is called WannaCry, or Wanna Decryptor, and exploits a vulnerability in the Windows operating system.

It allows the malware to automatically spread across networks, so it can quickly infect large numbers of machines at the same organisation.

Hacking group Shadow Brokers reportedly released the malmare last month, after claiming to have discovered the flaw from the US National Security Agency.

A large scale cyber attack...some questions to think about.

- Such a coordinated attack requires a large backdoor. NSA had such a backdoor with EternalBlue
- Most affected devices are Windows XP and such. So, does that mean NSA created the option to invade our personal computers a long time ago?....
- This attack is so effective because of the internet of things. Many people are only positive about the internet of things, but should we invest more heavily in cybersecurity now? I personally know a lot of subway systems still use windows XP. Shouldn't be a problem if they are never connected to the internet but apparently they are.
- Who would be behind this attack?
- Don't the hackers not know that all bitcoin transactions are traceable in the blockchain?
