Highest levels around the popular times

Gearshifter (First player to level 123)
S A X (second player to lvl 123) [picture]
Zonghui (lvl 122)
Ladykilljoy (lvl 121. She never really got pass 121. First to 99 strength)
Lilyuffie88 (lvl 113 to lvl 120s. wasn't very famous until she reached some high prayer lvl)

Famous & Legendary players

Random order. Names in bold mean that the player was also famous. Names not in bold mean that player was first to a skill

Rab: Apart from being the first player to sign up and being one of the alpha testers, he created 3 quests, and moderated RS on the name "Moderator" for a year. Had a huge influence in early Runescape.
Bluerose13x: First to 99 Smithing, first/second to 99 Magic. Controlled Runescape.
L6vi: Was ranked #1 overall for a while. Later on, Tks passed him/her. Overall hiscore picture of L6vi #1 here
Lilyuffie88: She was famous after achieving a high prayer level. First to 99 prayer
The Old Nite: I don't think he was known as the mentioned above but he was known for his kindness and his levels.
Tks: She was ranked number 1 overall for a very long time until she requested Jagex to lock her account for security reasons. First to 99 fishing and 99 cooking.
Bonebreaker6: Ranked #1 overall after Tks requested for her account to be locked. Never moved to RS2, that is when Zezima and Lilyuffie88 passed him in ranks.
Ezarc: First player to reach 85 mining. Supplied the ores to Bluerose13x.
Gearshifter: First player to level 123 combat. Was famous because of his combat level.
Ladykilljoy: First player to 99 strength. Was famous because of her/his combat level mainly.

Famous pkers

Due to the controversy of famous pkers, various users will have to recommend a famous pker for a pker to be added.

What is "RSC"?

RSC is means "RuneScape Classic". RuneScape Classic was the previous version of Runescape 2 (the game 99% of people play). RS2 was released in December 1, 2003. RSC remained open to everybody (f2p and p2p) until Jagex changed it to p2p only. Then, sometime in mid 2005, it was changed to "you must had played RS1 within the last 6 months to be able to play it AND be a member". There are currently very few people that are able to play RS1. Runescape Classic is also called Runescape 1 (RS1).

RSC Info

News: Section about Runescape being bought removed. I wrote it on Dec 8, 2007. When I didn't know as much about RS1 as I do now.

The following facts are from when RS1 was first opened to when RS2 was launched.

1. The member version of the game was launched on February 27, 2002.
2. The maximum combat level is 123. Prayer did affected combat level but not as much as in RS2.
3. You could only gain exp after killing the monster.
4. When your fatigue reached 100%, you had to go "ingame sleep" until it lowered. This was not in the game in the beginning. It is an addon ;).
5. You could (still can) duel/stake anyone anywhere. When you died, you only lost your STAKED items and you spawned in Lumbridge.
6. Click here to view the original "planned" RS layout. This is confirmed. Drawn by Andrew and then mirrored.
7. Crumble Undead was 98exp per shot.
8. Al Karid (as it was originally called) was added a week or 2 after the game opened, before that it was just ocean.
9. There was no Adamant armor in the beginning. It was slowly released piece by piece. Same thing with rune. After Rune armor was integrated into the game (but no-one had it since no monsters dropped it or no-one could make it).
10. Beer could be drunk infinitely to raise your strength to level 99 which was promptly changed after word spread.
11. There was no buddy list at first, you used to have to type "tell (enter name)" then type your message and it would send your message.
12. Click here to see a picture of the RS highscores as of 2002, very old ^.^
13. Runescape Open Beta was released on Jan 4, 2001. Click here to see pic. From the Internet Archive, search "http://jagex.com" > dec 5 2000 > "runescape coming soon!" =)
14. In the really early stages of RSC (before the wilderness), The Sabres had a huge influence. This is a pretty cool quote: Largest War: Barbarian Village Debacle (Mithril Clan and RPKers versus EARTH Alliance, Syndicate Alliance, Dark Syndicate Alliance, NKKA Clan, and Sabres) this war filled up an entire server, almost 75% of the approximately 1200 users signed in were fighting this war. - Taken from this website
15. The Wine trick. This was when you drunk wine down to level 8 or below and attacked dummies. They gave 5 attack experience and no hp experience. You would see level 13s with rune 2hs.
16. If you stood in one location for too long, it gave you a warning, saying that you needed to move or risk being logged out. So if you were say, waiting with your general store screen menu open, you had to close it and take a step and reopen it in order to not be logged out every little bit. If you didn't move, you would be logged out and have to type random text to be allowed back in.
17. Player names were case sensitive at first. Proof can be found by clicking here.
18. Edgeville was once called "Ghost Town".
19. Only one person could talk to a banker at a time.

How Runescape opened

NOTE: All information in this section has been confirmed by the real Rab.

Cyberwars was a popular game on GamesDomain where Andrew Gower wrote his net earlier games (link to the archive site March 2000). If you click "Cyber-wars" on the site, you will see that it says "Designed and programmed for GamesDomain by Jagex Software. Lead Programmer: Andrew Gower, Graphics by Ian Gower." He, Andrew, didn't own the site. This is where Rab, Lighting, Gugge, and Merlin met the brothers and their friends.

None of the RS alpha testers (Rab, Lightning, Gugge, and Merlin) ever played DeviousMUD. DeviousMUD was one of Andrew's many games.

Around Feb 2000, Andrew invited Rab, Lightning, Gugge, and Merlin to test the very basic Runescape. Only Lumbridge Castle, a sheep, and Bob existed. Gradually more things were added to Runescape. Rab created the "Romeo & Juliet" quest during the testing, closed, stage.

Runescape opened for the very first time to the public on January 4, 2001. When you made your account, you would select what you wanted to be; Wizard, Warrior, Range, Adventurer, or Necromancer. Tutorial Island did not exist. After this selection, you would select to be a "Player killer" or a "Non player-killer". Back then, you could attack anyone anywhere 5 levels above or below you. Banks did exist but you could only store coins and only 1 of them at a time.

On August 13, 2001, The Wilderness was added to Runescape and the previous player killing system was removed. On this same day, you could now see the exact experience you had in a skill. You couldn't before.

Black Partyhat: It is rumored that some players saw Andrew and Paul wearing what looked like a Black Partyhat. This is a rumor so you're free to believe it or not.

Oct 12, 2010: Had to remove all quotes inside the spoiler because they were causing some weird error which prevented everything from showing. Might be a little unorganized, but it still works.

Fun stuff
These are pictures that are interesting/fun to look at.
NEWS: Removed the "rune items used to be purple" picture because it was edited and took up valuable picture space.

This picture was taken before the introduction of p2p. Its really cool to look because it shows how those who are now millionaires were just simple aspiring millionaires -_-. It shows how they just used to be very friendly, they still are but yea, and open to everyone.

Picture of the thing where you could select to be a pker or non-pker. Very old! Thanks to Hohto for the pic.

Pk system before the wild was added. Notice at the top right.

This is the famous black hole from the banned person view. The way a visitor saw it was the same. You would buy a Disk of Return it from Throndor in the Dwarfen Mines. There was an 'Spin' option on it. You would spin it to get to the black hole and out of the black hole.

Old 3d renders of RS1. Again, these are old 3d renders, I think before the wilderness came out. So not everything that is currently in RS1 is in these pictures.

Taken on Feb 17th, 2001. I believe this was either (1) before it was officially opened/accessible to players or (2) it was added to the game but there was no way to get into it. Prayer Monastery.

just some easy corrections
prayer DID effect you combat level but not the same way. You also may want to add that magic affected your combat level regardless of strength and range levels.

When you talk about fatigue you may want to put the update date because it sounds like it was always there. Also at first you had to find beds to sleep in but later they updated with sleeping bags. Some other intresting things about fatigue was it allowed stakers and pures to keep "perfect" levels. This meant that people would get their stats so they were almost to the next level

another intresting fact is that you couldn't see people's combat levels except in the wild after they put in the wild and before they made a level seeing update. However if you climbed a ladder you could see people's levels because there was a glich that gave the attack option (it worked as you loaded the top of the ladder so you couldn't really attack)

i can't really comment on the rest because I didn't start that early and I do not remeber all the classes to choose. However I thought that the black party hat was a rumor but I am not sure.

Nice fact sheet. I hope i gave you some more things to add

Some things I noticed:

-I know you are not too sure on the date RS was started, and not very many people are. One thing I know for sure is that I was first showed runescape by a friend in February 2001, and later joined in March. If I was to guess, Id say RS was started during the end 2000, because when I joined there was already hundreds of players, and for a new game to start up it has to increase in popularity to gain players which takes a little time.

-The creator of runescape was Andrew himself, he did not overtake the game. He created another game very similar to runescape which never was fully programed nor realeased, but was drawn up. SO either he fully created runescape, or partly created it with paul and someone else.

-Black partyhats never came out. I played back then and never once saw a partyhat that was black although, some of the colored changed slightly.

Things you could add:

-Edgeville was not always a town. It had a few NPC's and had a different name, but when the wilderness was introduced, a bank was added along with a general store and a house full of men, and it was named.

-The famous PKing rampage. I never got to see this for myself, unfortunally but I remember logging on and seeing alot of players talking about one player found a glitch in the game and was killing other players outside of the wilderness. Don't ask me his name, but i'm sure you can find it, it started with a 'D'... I think.

-Clearify that it was that you could just attack people around your level wherever. You had to turn PKing on/off in order to player kill.

-The whole disk of returning deal was just a small punishment. After Jagex decided to delete this, all players inside where released, and that's when selective banning started.

EDIT:
- You can add how after rs2 was released, pretty sure, we made andrew mad and he started his mass ban to get rid of autoers, which in turn deleted a big share of the holiday drops, which took santas from 250k to 800k overnight.

that's just alot of what I can remember off the top of my head. I'll add more if I remember anything else.

Nice start, you may want to add S A X to your list, second person to 123 combat I believe. You should read up on some old RSC clan history as well, very interesting, beats clans now.

According to Wikipedia the game was released publicly in early January of '01.

As a Cambridge University undergraduate, Gower worked on a complete rewrite of the game with the assistance of his brother, Paul Gower. The isometric view was replaced by a mixture of both three-dimensional and two-dimensional sprites. The game, renamed RuneScape, was released to the public as a beta version on 4 January 2001 and was originally operated from their parents' house in Nottingham. In December 2001, the Gower brothers and Constant Tedder formed Jagex to take over the business aspects of running RuneScape.

Heres my source of Info.

Nice compilation. Wizard was the 5th class. That's what I chose =) and depending on which class you chose, it started you off with a small xp boost, if I remember correctly.

Add that you use to be able to stake a person anywhere in the game, not only in the duel arena. People staked around lumbirdge so that right when they died they were still in the player made duel arena.

I thought there was one missing
i chose a miner and I started off with a pick and 3 mining i think

Also people staked at draynor because it was the closest bank to lumbridge.

I know, anyone can believe what they want, but im just adding to that by saying it was created before february 2001 :P
Black PHAT was a rumor, and i've got another rumor that I remember circulating...
theoldnite, or the old nite, i can't remember how it was spelled... anyway he was up in either the second or third highscore spot, when a rumor started going around that he died :O
I thought it was true at the time, but somehow he has gotten 99 slayer lol, so i don't think it was true.

He died after he maxed out his skills, and btw this is for classic for rs2

btw zonghui was first to 123

Musashi22 was the first to 99 smithing.... -.-

I've always read and remember that BlueroseX was the person who got 99 smithing first. It's been shown everywhere.

runescape is based off a game called devious mud developed by andrew gower, it was never released and decided to be reworked, which later became RuneScape and which is now RuneScape classic, it only says take over because it means that they wanted to make a company to front the game rather than independent developers, it made the backbone of runescape more secure, trust me, it was never in the hands of anyone else

I read something about prayer not affecting your combat level, which isn't true, this is how it was calculated:

- HP and Defense counted for 0,25 towards a combat level
- Str and Att counted towards 0,33 (or only Str, I'm not too sure)
- Prayer and Magic counted for 0,125 (so 8 prayer and/or magic levels = 1 combat level)

Don't have time for the rest but I'll drop by later.

Lilyuffie88: She was famous because of her level

If I may edit on that: She was like a RS Classic legend, being the first person with 126 combat and 99 prayer. It used to be her, the old nite and zezima for the top ranks. (Source: Avenged Clan Forums)

EOS callers rental rate is 500m per hour. #RSEOS if interested.

DG Keanu was free and lead us to victory, re-evaluate how important you think you are.
