Since RoT exploded the RS clan world has gained a fair bit of traction on platforms such as twitter/twitch/reddit, but it hasn't really broken through in the mainstream media (fairly understandably). You don't open up a newspaper and hear about Damage Inc V2 closing or what the chances of VR making a comeback are. That's now changed. In the past few days The New Yorker, one of the most reputable news outlets worldwide, published an article, which was #1 on their most popular list, on the live-streamer Ice Poseidon which discussed Runescape and briefly delved into the clan world, describing "the Reign of Terror" as "the most powerful clan in the game". ( https://www.newyorke...a-live-streamer ).

Whilst this is clearly great exposure for runescape clanning, it poses some immediate questions:

Is this the first of more breakthoughs into the mainstream media?

Will such exposure help to grow the clan world?

Has there ever been a clan that has brought as much exposure to clanning as RoT?

This is one time thing and it was written because he became so much bigger than this game. He became more than just a runescape streamer and more than just a twitch streamer. He has a massive follower base outside of gaming community. don't  expect any mainstream media mentioning runescape or clanning.

Being best in 2018 means nothing anymore. Maybe in 2005 2006 2008 2009 when there was some sort of a clan world and competition being labeled best had some sort of meaning. People who still seriously take clanning or ranking nowadays should reevaluate their priorities.

No, no and no.

The only other time I expect to see anything clan world related in the news is an arrest for doxing/ddosing/swatting.

You keep telling yourself that whilst your clan lurks in the shadow of its former self, currently ranked no higher than #6 (& that's me being generous) lol.

You're right in saying that the clan world isn't as competitive as it once was, but that’s down to the clans that the ‘community’ consists of. Taking this as a prime example, you’re actually excusing your clans' inability to fight us by throwing the 'we don't take the game seriously anymore' card around whilst indirectly insinuating that we do.

The clan world’s just too too pusc and requires RoT to exert little-to-no effort to maintain their rank as #1, which is a shame, honestly.

Rot closed during the first crash war, when it actually mattered. Enjoy playing deadman and losing to some complete randoms.

Great read but ya this has nothing to do with rot. I think the word clan was in the article just once?

Stop trying so hard it's off-putting.

I kinda miss when Ice was just starting to take off, in particular I vaguely remember a stream where he was trying to survive a skull in dmm by calling in favors from a few clans, half the time they would just go for him, it was great. Now Ice went off the deep end and finals turned dmm into osrs's black sheep, but at least we have our memories...

One line of text on clanning in a rather long and pretty sad article. I think RoT brought more attention to the clan world than other clans, albeit mostly negative. I remember Reddit blowing up after DMM because of the ddossing and doxing accusations, whether true or not it has harmed the image of warring clans even further. All the beef with Frontline and negative exposure they brought didn't exactly create a better image for the clanning world either. This kind of exposure will not attract new people. Ofcourse, seeing the disgusting flames other clans produce ingame will probably not make new people want to join the clanning world either. So all in all the clan world can blame itself for the current state and shouldn't expect to grow if they don't change themselves first. Any kind of exposure on the current clanning world would be negative, unless they'd hide the majority of things going on.

Currently I don't think RuneScape will reach mainstream media unless it would be something negative. There's simply not a whole lot of positive things going on, with the clan world ever shrinking and RS3 turning into an MTX milking cow.
