I do exactly the same when it comes to deciding which special voyages to do. Is there any credible source behind that speculation or is it just a bunch of guess work?

I know a Jmod said there would be a pretty nice reward at the conclusion of each story line, including a new additional special story line but never anything about the mentioned reward.

I started a few days late; still 35% through hook region. For the most part I've been picking missions based first on chance of success. After that it's port resources awarded, followed by story lines, and then last scrolls or trade item rewards.
My reasoning is that no matter what, there are still a lot of missions required to get the various rewards: it will take multiple scrolls, plus the missions to get the trade items needed to make the armour, not to mention the workshop upgrades needed. I think it's more important to play the long game: get your ship and crews upgraded to increase the chance of success on these harder missions, and build up the cash reserve needed to do port upgrades. Not to mention being able to hire that 10,000 chime captain when he or she walks into the bar...
BTW, my big frustration (looking forward) is the need for high-level smithing or runecrafting in order to build the melee or mage armors, and even the fletching requirement for some of the higher-level scrimshaws. So without raising skills I hadn't planned to focus on I'll be pretty much limited to range armor (my weakest combat skill).
On the other hand, the minigame is fun in and of itself -- the first time I've found that to be the case in RS for a long time.

I don't know about story missions granting good rewards, like increased goods rewarded or something - I value story missions lowest from all, with scrolls highest, trading goods 2nd (chi etc), port resources 3rd and story 4th. This will change when I have enough scrolls though, since I am at the moment going for being able to make an upper body for each trading good, and a scrimshaw - after that maybe my priorities will change

By the way, how are people staffing their crew roster? And how many "specials" do you keep (and which ones?)
I currently have 16 specialists (about half tier 3 and half tier 4), 5 dual-skill (2 sirens and three clay golems), and 2 overseers. That seems a pretty good mix given that I'm only running 2 ships. I can usually put together two good ships, depending on the exact needs. This leaves me a couple of spots for the extra guys who will only go along on easier missions -- trader, fireworks, or soothsayer. I've almost ruled out the soothsayer and probably will go for a trader, though it's also been nice being able to speed up some of the easier missions...

5x highest melee
5x highest seafaring
5x highest morale
2x overseer with +50 solidarity
1x slate golem, 1x feral chimera (both dual for morale and combat)
2x siren whalerider
and then 4 randoms which I haven't gotten around to upgrade yet
(just unlocked scythe, so its about 70% t3 (hook) and 30% t2 (skull) - gets me to about 5-6k skill without ship stats)
Actually currently I stopped chasing highest region, and am upping my slate for 3 ships upgrade. While I'm at it I'll run some lower missions for gunpowder port upgrades as well to up my crew :)

Only have 2 Chimeras and one Siren. They help a lot in hybrid missions so regret not getting more Sirens. If anyone doesn't know, lifeboats from the random event are permanent so Golems aren't too useful if you have 2 lifeboats since Chimeras > Golems(even the Cherrywood one)

Permanent as in forever? How do you know this?
Does it show on screen if its active or not?

Yes unless it's a bug. Only lifeboat I ever got and it still says active on my 2nd ship after saving my crew member twice now. Same thing applies with the spectacles and the other fortune one.

I have only used combat and morale boosts but i dont see anywhere where it tells you that its active. Im definitely going to activate the lifeboat now but would like to know where on the screen it shows you that these boosts are active. Thanks

The Add Effect button in the Voyage Selection screen should display active if you used it.

When you go to the voyages screen and click Add effect you will see the boosts you have. If you have a life boat active should be written under Protect Crew like that. : http://www.imageurlh...9jzae16abcr.png

When you click on 'add effect' or whatever it is, it should say active underneath the respective perk. Used one of the fortune ones 5 or 6 days ago, and it still shows it as active.
Edit: hate posting from my phone, got beaten to it twice lol.
