Jagex has formally announced its involvement in upcoming shooter Ace of Spades.
The company, best known for its free-to-play MMO Runescape, revealed that the game will launch on Steam in December 2012.
Ace of Spades has been live as a prototype for just over a year, during which time it's been installed by 2.5 million players. The retro-looking first person shooter is best described as MineCraft meets Team Fortress, as it allows 32 players to battle it out in a sandbox environment where bunkers, tunnels and entire fortresses can all be constructed in real-time.
Jagex CMO David Solari said, “If you’re tired of the same old first person shooters, coming out year after year with a fresh lick of paint and a hefty price tag, then Ace of Spades will tick all the boxes for you, offering an all action multiplayer featuring up to 32 player FPS combat and a fully customisable environment which will continuously develop throughout your battle.
"We have blended the artistic style of voxel-based sandbox games, such as Minecraft, with the class based combat of titles like Team Fortress, and added an extra dimension with real-time evolving battlefields to create a game which we firmly believe will appeal to FPS gamers looking for a bigger challenge."

Well this is very interesting, especially the fact that it's going to be a steam game to. I will have to say it's a very...alternate...approach to an FPS. I'll look forward to seeing what they have in store with this project.

Surely I'm not the only when getting the feeling they put a bit more on their plate than they can handle. Don't have much faith until I see them finish a major project from the past few years.

War of Legends doesn't count.

I play Ace of Spades regularly, and it's an amazingly fun game. If they take down the current version and make it Steam only, i'm done. Not giving Jagex anymore money than i have to.

Just for the record, Jagex is only the publisher of this game. They are not the ones who are coding it.

They have an even worse track record when it comes to that.

Although this is the now US owned JaGeX having a go at publishing something so I guess we can forget about the blunders of the past such as War of Legends.

I suggest you correct your records, sir.
The old version (anything up to v0.76) was developed by Ben Aksoy and Mathias Kærlev in the voxlap engine. Jagex currently publishes that version.

The version(1.0) that will be released on Steam is being developed by Jagex as the original developers quit and it will use OpenGL engine.
------------------------------------------------

It will be released on 12/12/12 for the price of 9.99$.
Check out the trailers to see what to expect:

I won't lie, the game is fun and good for quick FPS action. I don't mind it being on Steam as long as it is not overpriced.

At first I thought Minecraft hacked RuneScape's main page... but then I realized it's just a rip-off of Minecraft published by Jagex:

I play the steam version with friends. It can be laggy at times but generally it's fantastic, I will admit though, it is just Minecraft and TF2 combined, I'm suprised Jagex haven't been sued yet for plagiarism. It is a good game on the whole though, and £6.99 is a bargain for what you're getting!
