I remember when I started playing Runescape. It was back in 2004, back in the "good ol' days". Not going to discuss that here, but I remember
why I kept playing this wild and exotic game. Because it seemed so new, so versatile (and because it was one of the only games my cpu could run at the time :innocent: ) I
always had something new to explore, I thought. Then later, I became a member, did it all, and now I am here.

However, when new players start today, the experience of the game must be wildly different. Not only can they trade any significant amount of gold to eachother, they are
no longer guided by the fantastic and joyful tutorial island. Instead they are now guided to kill some trolls and constantly see adverts for membership. And that is only if you are
a member from the start! New free to plays have to be left alone in the dark woods of Lumbridge following some task system!

So what do you guys thing the new players of Runescape think about it when they start?
Do you even think that many new players ARE starting at all?
What do you think of the new tutorial that only is for members?

Feel free to discuss!

It's really not good. They need to just bring back tutorial island. F2P worlds are so crowded in Lumbridge and a lot of people don't know what to do.

Nice first topic and welcome to the boards Chokii. Your name reminded me of a tv program that I loved in the early 80's (showing my age -_-) Chocky

So what do you guys thing the new players of Runescape think about it when they start?

It's really hard to say as a member since my (and many other players on these boards at least) only real dealings with f2p these days is warring in the wild. I can only imagine that most new players start much like the rest of us did with the exception of now doing a task system rather than the tutorial island.

Do you even think that many new players ARE starting at all?

That is a more interesting question. With the introduction of 'refer a friend' I think Jagex even encouraged members to set up secondary accounts to take advantage of this offer... so any actual figures would be skewed.

There are a lot of games these days that are similar to rs so players really are spoilt for choice. As a result, genuine newbs are probably a small % compared to when we joined.

What do you think of the new tutorial that only is for members?

I haven't tried it yet but I think it's probably a good thing. When I first became a member, it was in many ways like starting a new game all over again. The basic set up was there, but with all the additional content it was quite hard to work out what was what. These days were efficiency is a key factor in game play, there would be the potential of losing newly aquired members before they even got started... so yes, a tutorial can't hurt.

First of all, thanks for the nice welcome!
Your name reminds me of "Come Together", showing my interest in the old times :-)

The new tutorial isn't really like an introduction to the member's world alone, with the exception of the special attack and pet. It really is like a tutorial for absolutely NEW people, who haven't played the game a single time. Or in common words "newb" :-D

This means that Jagex is expecting every new player to directly become a paying member, which most people don't want to (I would never start playing a completely new game that i've never heard of and paying for it directly just to get a tutorial). If you don't pay from the start, you are quite likely to learn the game mechanics fast. This means that once (if) you become a member this new tutorial really will be wasted for you.

It also doesn't cover all skills!

Thanks for your responses ToeJam and Tee 3!

How do you know that lost of people buy their accounts? That doesn't make sense if i am playing a new game to buy some account that is new maxed for 50 or even 100 dollars.

On subject, i like the new member tutorial it was better than tutorial island, but i do agree that tutorial island needs to be brought back for new f2pers. Also the revamp quests are much better than their old counterparts and they give better rewards too!

What got me into runescape was that it took so damn long to train the skills and since there was new stuff at regular intervals I actually had a drive to get levels. then I quit cause I got bored. came back, maxed combat, and now the only reason I play is for clan events. go figure.

I'd imagine those aren't new players though

because what's the point of starting the game and immediately buying someone else's account?

although it would explain how people fall for such stupid scams though lol

People care a lot more about graphics nowadays. Even if it tells you nothing about the game itself, sleek design draw people in and is the first thing new players notice. I have a feeling that's why Jagex has been fiddling with cosmetic updates for the better part of a year now, which includes a complete revamp of the website and forums to make them more visually appealing. It doesn't do much for existing players though, who can remember the days of basic 3D shapes without textures or additional rendering. In fact, for that population, it might even be an unnecessary annoyance since nostalgia for the old days run strong. Therefore, Jagex is going to have to strike a delicate balance between updates to existing content to keep up with MMORPG standards and releasing new challenges for the more experienced crowd. I think it's certainly possible; especially if you consider January's series of graphical changes and compare it to February's upcoming Tzharr quest and elite Fight Caves minigame.

It's very easy to impress new players, just walk around with expensive looking armor and a decent combat level and they will be impresses. Give them 5k cash and they will be your slave for life.

A new member would be impressed by what looks the nicest, as they have no idea what is actually the most valuable.

There are many new players starting, just go to any free world in lumbridge. I think there are also a lot of old players returning for the nostalgia

The members tutorial is a fantastic idea, as unless you had p2p friends when you became a member in the past, you had absolutely no idea what to do. I remember playing castle wars for weeks because it was the only thing I knew how to do.

I've actually shown RuneScape to some IRL friends for the first time recently and the first thing they say is, "The graphics suck" - which makes my jaw drop because I think the graphics are beautiful (compared to previous versions of RuneScape!) ... and then they say, "Why is the game so laggy? You click and it takes like one whole second for your character to move!" - but of course, I don't even notice that!

The greatest problem is that people instantly compare RuneScape to other games they've played: MMORPGs that allow WASD movement where lag happens after you've moved instead of before like in RuneScape... and they compare it to 16 GB sized games with beautiful life-like scenery. You can't really compare life-like scenery to a cartoon-art like game that RuneScape is!

The only way people can get "won over" to RuneScape is if they actually sit down, bite the bullet, and just play the game for an hour or so. That's how I got started: I saw it back in 2001, thought it was lame, an hour later, I was like, "Omg best game ever!"

I feel it's up to high level players to guide lower level players to what's really out there. People get so much more out of Runescape if they just think about what's more fun for them rather than what people are doing because it's what everyone does. People get discouraged by higher level players with their uber bank, but most of us had it rough as well. I, for one, will go above and beyond to help others figure out their way through all the rigorous training, complicated quests and difficult bosses.
