I have a quick question: if the limit for an item I'm buying is 5,000 and I buy 1,000, will I be able to purchase the full 5,000 in 4 hours? I'd assume so, but just want to check.
Thanks for any help

I think the Grand Exchange Limit resets after 4 hours so you can 5000 of that item after the 4 hours.

Not much of a flipper but I'm pretty sure the timer begins the moment you buy that item.
So yes you should be able to purchase another 5000 after 4 hours.

Grand Exchange limit mechanics:
Every 4 hours your limit is reset to it's set number.
The timer starts from the FIRST item you purchase or sell of that type.
If during those 4 hours instead of buying an item you sell an item, that items limit will be increased by that much until the 4 hour limit is reached.
-Example: If you sell 1,000 death runes, instead of a 25,000 limit you now have a 26,000 limit until the next time your death rune limit is reset

Thanks to everyone :)
So if I bought 5,000 of an item with a limit of 5k and sell that 5k, I can buy 10k of them? I'm not sure I follow...?

Close.
If you buy 5,000 of an item with a 5,000 limit
then wait 4 hours so your limits are reset
now normally you can buy 5,000 of this item now
but if you sell your original 5,000 it will make your limit 10,000 for 4 hours from when you sold the first one.
