Machinima Tool – The Orb Of Oculus 01-Feb-2010

The hope is that it will make things easier for any players who enjoy making RuneScape videos, and encourage a wider number of players to enter our imminent machinima competition. So, if you’ve ever wanted to make a video of someone taking on the KBD with a bronze dagger (or joke about what you might do should you ever meet Jagex’s CEO...), then the Orb of Oculus should help you to realise your vision.
Although the orb’s primary function is to help make things a bit easier for budding filmmakers, we also fully expect it to be put to other, equally inventive uses, much like Faruq’s other 'emergent gameplay' tools for games.

1. First and foremost, I think you should be able to chat while in viewing mode, maybe a hotkey (f2) the hides/show chat bar.
Whats the point of video making if you cant command anyone?
2. Less choppy motion, self explanatory.
3. Ability to move while filming, not that important though since you can move the camera.

I know, its edited xD

But what we get is even worse... some kind of 'camera' that is supposed to give a wide view...or something?
that doesn't take away from the main dissapointment... it's HORRIBLE to control. there is some kinds of aim mode and some kind of focus mode.
If you are in aim mode, the camera doesn't pan... it sorta hops along. I have no idea why they couldn't make the camera pan like normal. No video would look good like that.
Then there's the focus mode, which makes the camera focus around one main point. This works worse than you would think.
It gives you the kind of pan you get on the login screen, which is nice, but not really usable for machinimas exept maybe the opening scene.
Apart from that, you can film nothing more than you already could, apart from:
-You can't film yourself because you cant talk, emote or wield anything
-Bird's eye view
And even worse, you can't move the camera while filming. well you can, but it's a choice:
-choppy, screen jumping action
-login screen pan (when would you use that?)
It seems to me normal camera is better. you can film yourself (really helpful when you are not excl and you don't have 20 friends at your disposal), and you can move the camera normally.
exept if you want to make a birds eye view. then i guess this works fine. good job jagex
edit: oh look you can zoom in. like we really wanted to see runescape up close. It's so detailed and all.

This thing can make any angle you want to. it can close up, zoom out, view an entire field, you name it.
you could make a low angle view in a pk world in edgeville, and get a great shot of a lot of pkers at the same time.
That's it. It's good for screenshots only it seems.
when you make a video, the camera can only move in 1 direction, and it's not the one you want. This is because of an inherent problem: the camera focuses around one point. You can't move the focus point without a lot of choppyness.
too bad. This could've been very good.
