Firstly, I think allowing large images in jpeg format and not in png or other formats will cause a lot of confusion. People will see large images somewhere, and they will think it's ok to upload them in any format. Clear cut rules are the easiest ones to follow. Secondly, when you load a page, the pictures first load in their full size, and only afterwards are they resized. On certain threads with lots of images, it can really be a pain to try and load them.
